Pharmaceutical Company Produces Vaccines Tracking/ Advice App

I must admit, over the last five or six years of traveling and working in various corners of the world, I’m not entirely sure of which vaccinations I have and haven’t had. It’s also a constantly effort to keep up with exactly what is needed: for particular trips in the last five years there have been at least a dozen needles poked in various parts of my anatomy, and I’ve probably had one or two twice. Of course, being awful at keeping track is my fault, but things go missing when you travel a lot, and when vaccines are administered all over the world, there’s no ‘master’ record to go back to. As usual, there’s an Apple-product App that has an easy answer.

Vaxtrak was originally aimed at helping parents to keep track of exactly which essential vaccines their children have and haven’t had. They’ve recently expanded into the travel market, though, and incorporated an advice section you can check on the go: particularly useful for multi-country trips, or when you just don’t have time to get to a doctor. Of course, we wouldn’t suggest replacing a medical professional with an iPhone application, but as we all know, events on the road are sometimes a case of ‘needs must’.

If you live in the US , you can also learn where to go and get your necessary vaccinations, making the most of the iPhone’s GPS systems. If you have a big family to keep track of, you can program the essentials for each member, and a countdown timetable helps you keep track of when new or follow up vaccinations are necessary, highlighting them in bright red when they reach the ‘overdue’ stage. If you decide you don’t need a vaccination, or you change your travel plans, there’s a simple ‘opt out’ button, too.

If there’s one thing missing, we’d suggest that marginally sensitive data could be better combined with an application password protect, as things like iPods do have a nasty habit of going missing. Having said that, simply not entering anything too sensitive is an option, and personally I wouldn’t be too concerned if someone learnt exactly which jabs I have already received. Given the App is free and serves a genuinely useful, practical purpose for travelers, we can’t help feeling a little endeared.
